APOLLODORUS , of See also:

Damascus, a famous See also:Greek architect, who flourished during the znd See also:century A.D. He was a favourite of See also:Trajan, for whom he constructed the See also:stone See also:bridge over the See also:Danube (A.D. 104-105). He also planned a gymnasium, a See also:college, public See also:baths, the See also:Odeum and the See also:Forum Trajanum,within the See also:city of See also:Rome; and the triumphal See also:arches at Beneventum and See also:Ancona. The Trajan See also:column in the centre of the Forum is celebrated as being the first triumphal See also:monument of the See also:kind. On the See also:accession of See also:Hadrian, whom he had offended by ridiculing his performances as architect and artist, Apollodorus was banished, and, shortly afterwards, being charged with imaginary crimes, put to See also:death (Dio See also:Cassius lxix. 4). He also wrote a See also:treatise on See also:Siege Engines (HoXwpKrlroKa), which was dedicated to Hadrian.
