He graduated at See also:West Point in 1845, and in the Mexican See also:War earned two brevets for distinguished conduct. In 1856 he resigned from the See also:army; and in 1857-1861 he led a scientific expedition in the See also:state of Sonora, See also:Mexico. He re-entered the service in 1861, and became a brigadier-See also:general, See also:United States See also:Volunteers, but the defeat of a detachment at See also:Ball's See also:Bluff (Oct. 21, 1861) was attributed to him, and he was imprisonedfor six months, being then released without any See also:charge being brought against him. After serving for See also:short periods in the latter stages of the war, he resigned his See also:commission (See also:Sept. 1864). He was engineer and See also:superintendent of a See also:mining See also:company in See also:Virginia from 1865 to 187o, when he entered the military service of the See also:khedive of See also:Egypt, whose See also:chief of See also:staff and general aide-de-See also:camp he became, with the See also:rank of See also:lieutenant-general and the See also:title of " Ferik See also:Pasha." He returned to the United States in 1883, and resumed his See also:engineering See also:work. He died in New See also:York See also:City on the 24th of See also:January 1887.
