APOLLONI IS , surnamed o hixreohor (" the Surly or Crabbed"), a celebrated grammarian of See also:Alexandria, who lived in the reigns of See also:Hadrian and See also:Antoninus See also:Pius. He spent the greater See also:part of his See also:life in his native See also:city, where he died; he is also said to have visited See also:Rome and attracted the See also:attention of Antoninus. He was the founder of scientific See also:grammar and is styled by See also:Priscian gramenaticorum princeps. Four of his See also:works are extant: On Syntax, ed. See also:Bekker, 1817; and three smaller See also:treatises, on Pronouns, Conjunctions and Adverbs, ed. See also:Schneider, 1878.
