OROPUS , a See also:

Greek seaport, on the Euripus, in the See also:district Hetpaiail, opposite See also:Eretria. It was a border See also:city between See also:Boeotia and See also:Attica, and its See also:possession was a continual cause of dispute between the two countries; but at last it came into the final possession of See also:Athens, and is always alluded to under the See also:Roman See also:empire as an See also:Attic See also:town. The actual See also:harbour, which was called Delphinium, was at the mouth of the Asopus, about a mile See also:north of the city. A See also:village still called Oropo occupies the site of the See also:ancient town. The famous See also:oracle of See also:Amphiaraus was situated in the territory of Oropus, 12 stadia from the city. The site has been excavated by the Greek Archaeological Society; it contained a See also:temple, a sacred See also:spring, into which coins were thrown by worshippers, altars and porticoes, and a small See also:theatre, of which the See also:proscenium is well pre-served. Worshippers used to consult the oracle of Amphiaraus by sleeping on the skin of a slaughtered See also:ram within the sacred See also:building.
