ANTHELION (See also:late Gr. avOil]uos, opposite the See also:sun) , the luminous See also:ring or See also:halo sometimes seen in Alpine or polar regions surrounding the See also:shadow of the See also:head of an observer See also:cast upon a See also:bank of See also:cloud or mist. The halo diminishes in brightness from the centre outwards, and is probably due to the diffraction of See also:light. Under favourable 'conditions four concentric rings may be seen See also:round the shadow of the observer's head, the outermost, which seldom appears, having an angular See also:radius of 400.
