He was educated at See also:Winchester school and See also:Oriel See also:College, See also:Oxford, and taking his degree with first-class honours in See also:classics, he became See also:fellow of Merton College. On his See also:father's See also:death in 1838, he succeeded to the baronetcy as 8th See also:baronet. His services as poor-See also:law See also:commissioner, to which See also:post he was appointed in 1841 after five years as assistant-commissioner, procured for him in 1847 the See also:office of See also:lieutenant-governor of New See also:Brunswick, whence he passed in r854 to the governor-generalship of See also:Canada, which he retained till 1861. The following See also:year, having returned -N. See also:England, Head was nominated a See also:civil service commissioner. In 1857 he was sworn of the Privy See also:Council, and in 186o was decorated as K.C.B.,while in the course of his career he received the degrees of D.C.L. at Oxford and LL.D. at See also:Cambridge. He died in See also:London on the 28th of See also:January 1868, the baronetcy becoming See also:extinct, as his only son had died in 1859. Sir Edmund. Head wrote the See also:article " See also:Painting " in the See also:Penny Cyclopaedia; A Handbook of the See also:Spanish and See also:French See also:Schools of Painting (1845) ; Shall and 'Will, or two Chapters on Future See also:Auxiliary Verbs (1856) and See also:Ballads and other Poems, See also:Original and Translated (1868).
