In 1847 he took See also:charge of the See also:longitude See also:department of the See also:United States See also:Coast Survey, where he was among the first to make use of the electric See also:telegraph for the purpose of determining the difference of longitude between two stations, and he introduced the method of registering transit observations electrically by means of a See also:chronograph. He also investigated the See also:orbit of the newly discovered See also:planet See also:Neptune. He died near See also:Cincinnati on the 3oth of See also:January 1853. His See also:brother See also:Timothy (1802—1856) was a See also:leader of the See also:Ohio See also:bar. See See also:Memoirs of the See also:Roy. Astr. See also:Soc. vol. See also:xxiii.
