When he was a See also:child his See also:family settled at See also:Rochester, New See also:York. Although entirely self-taught, he became a distinguished painter of animals, the figure and landscape. His pictures, principally of See also:Canadian See also:peasant See also:life and scenes, show the See also:influence of Tr'oyon and See also:Millet, mainly in their feeling for largeness of See also:composition, in solidity of See also:painting and in the choice of theme. He became a member of the See also:National See also:Academy of See also:Design, New York, in 1891; of the American See also:Water Color Society and of the Royal See also:Institute of Painters in Water See also:Colours, See also:London. He received a See also:medal and a diploma at See also:Chicago, 1893; and medals at See also:Buffalo, 1901; See also:Charleston, 1902; and St See also:Louis, 1904. In 1888 he won the See also:Evans See also:prize of the American Water Color Society, New York.
