BAR , a See also:town of See also:Russia, in the See also:government of See also:Podolia, 5o m. N,E. of Kamenets, on an affluent of the See also:Bug. Pop. (1897) 10,614. It was formerly called Rov. Its See also:present designation was bestowed upon it in memory of See also:Bari in See also:Italy (where she was See also:born) by See also:Bona See also:Sforza, the See also:consort of See also:Sigismund I. of See also:Poland, who rebuilt the town after its destruction in 1452 by the See also:Tatars. 'From 1672 to 1699 it remained in See also:possession of the See also:Turks. In 1768 a See also:confederation of the See also:Polish nobles (see next See also:article) against the Russians was formed in the town, which was shortly after taken by See also:storm, but did not become finally See also:united to Russia till the See also:partition of 1793.
