ITINERARIUM , a valuable See also:register, still extant; of the stations and distances along the various roads of the See also:Roman See also:empire, seemingly based on See also:official documents, which were probably those of the survey organized by See also:Julius See also:Caesar; and carried out under See also:Augustus. Nothing is known with certainty as to the date or author. It is considered probable that the date of the See also:original edition was the beginning of the 3rd See also:century, while that which we possess is to be assigned to the See also:time of See also:Diocletian. If the author or See also:promoter of the See also:work is one of the emperors, it is most likely to be See also:Antoninus See also:Caracalla. See also:Editions by Wesseling, 1735, Parthey and See also:Pindar, 1848. The portion See also:relating to See also:Britain was published under the See also:title Iter Britanniarum, with commentary by T. See also:Reynolds, 1799.
