ARICINI , the See also:ancient inhabitants of See also:Aricia (q.v.), the See also:form of the name ranking them with the Sidicini, See also:Marrucini (q.v.), &c., as one of the communities belonging probably to the earlier or Volscian stratum of See also:population on the See also:west See also:side of See also:Italy, who were absorbed by the See also:Sabine or Latin immigrants. See also:Special See also:interest attaches to this trace of their earlier origin, because of the famous cult of See also:Diana Nemorensis, whose See also:temple in the See also:forest See also:close by Aricia, beside the lacus Nemorensis, was served by " the See also:priest who slew the slayer, and shall himself be slain "; that is to say, the priest, who was called rex Nemorensis, held See also:office only so See also:long as he could defend himself from any stronger See also:rival. This cult, which is unique in Italy, is picturesquely described in the opening See also:chapter of J. G. Frazer's See also:Golden Bough (2nd ed., 1900) where full references will be found. Of these references the most important are, perhaps, See also:Strabo v. 3. 12; See also:Ovid, See also:Fasti, 263-272; and Suetonius, Calig. 35, whose wording indicates that the old-See also:world See also:custom was dying out in the 1st See also:century A.D. It is a reasonable conjecture that this extraordinary relic of barbarism was characteristic of the earlier stratum of the population who presumably called themselves Arici. On the anthropological aspect of the cult, see also A. B. See also:Cook, Class. Rev. See also:svi., 1902, p. 365, where the whole See also:evidence is very fully collected ; and Frazer's Studies in the See also:Early See also:History of Kingship (190 ), where he accepts Cook's See also:criticism of his own earlier theory.
