AUCKLAND ISLANDS , a See also:group in the Pacific Ocean, discovered in 18o6 by See also:Captain Briscoe, of- the See also:English whaler " Ocean," in 50° 24' S., , 66° 7' E. The islands, of volcanic origin, are very fertile, and are covered with See also:forest. They were granted to the Messrs Enderby by the See also:British See also:government as a whaling station, but the See also:establishment was abandoned in 1852. The islands belong politically to New See also:Zealand.
