BALUSTRADE , a See also:

parapet or See also:low See also:screen consisting of a See also:coping or See also:rail supported on balusters (q.v.). Sometimes it is employed purely as a decorative feature beneath the See also:sill of a window which was not carried down to. the ground. Sometimes flowing foliage takes the See also:place of the parapet, and sometimes so-called balustrades are formed of See also:vertical slabs of See also:stone, pierced as in the Ca' d'oro at See also:Venice and the balconies of the minarets at See also:Cairo.
