BARABRA , a name for the complex Nubian races of the See also:Egyptian See also:Sudan, whose See also:original stock is Hamitic-See also:Berber, longmodified by See also:negro crossings. The word is variously derived from Berberi, i.e. See also:people of Berber, or as identical with°Barabara, figuring in the inscription on a gateway of Tethmosis I. as the name of one of the 113 tribes conquered by him. In a later inscription of See also:Rameses II. at See also:Karnak (c. 1300 B.C.) Beraberata is given as that of a See also:southern conquered people. Thus it is suggested that Barabra is a real ethnical name, confused later with See also:Greek and See also:Roman barbarus, and revived in its proper meaning subsequent to the Moslem See also:conquest. A tribe living on the See also:banks of the See also:Nile between See also:Wadi Halfa and See also:Assuan are called Barabra.
