BARBACENA , an inland See also:

town of See also:Brazil, in the See also:state of See also:Minas Geraes, 150 M. N.N.W. of Rio de Janeiro and about 3500 ft. above See also:sea-level. The surrounding See also:district is chiefly agricultural, producing See also:coffee, See also:sugar-See also:cane, See also:Indian See also:corn and See also:cattle, and the town has considerable commercial importance. It is also noted for its' healthiness and possesses a large See also:sanatorium much frequented by convalescents from Rio de Janeiro during the hot See also:season. Barbacena was formerly a See also:principal distributing centre for the See also:mining districts of Minas Geraes, but this distinction was lost when the See also:railways were extended beyond that point.
