BARE , a See also:town and See also:municipality of the See also:state of Rio Grande do Sul, See also:Brazil, about 176 m. by See also:rail W.N.W. of the See also:city of Rio Grande do Sul. Pop. of the municipality (1890) 22,692. It is situated in a hilly region 774 ft. above See also:sea-level, and is the commercial centre of a large See also:district on the Uruguayan border in which See also:pastoral occupations are largely predominant. This region is the See also:watershed for See also:southern Rio Grande do Sul, from which streams flow E. and S.E. to the See also:Atlantic See also:coast, and N.W. and S.W. to the See also:Uruguay See also:river. The town See also:dates from colonial times, and has always been considered a See also:place of military importance because of its nearness to the Uruguay frontier, only 25 M. distant. It was captured by the See also:Argentine See also:general Lavalle in 1827, and figured conspicuously in most of the See also:civil See also:wars of See also:Argentina.
