CAPONIER (from the Fr. caponniere, properly a capon-cote or See also:house) , in fortification, a See also:work constructed in the ditch of a' fort. Its See also:fire (musketry, See also:machine-guns, See also:case shot, &c.) sweeps the bottom of the ditch and prevents an enemy from establishing himself in it. The See also:term is used in a military sense as See also:early as in the See also:late 17th See also:century. In various bastioned systems of fortification a caponier served merely as a covered means of See also:access to outworks, the See also:bastion trace providing for the See also:defence of the ditch by fire from the See also:main See also:parapet.
