CARVING . To carve (A.S. ceorfan: connected with Gr. yp6. i tv) is to cut, whatever the material; but apart from the domestic sense of carving See also:

meat, the word is more particularly associated with the See also:art of See also:sculpture. The name of sculptor (see SCULPTURE) is commonly reserved for the See also:great masters of the art, especially in See also:stone and See also:marble, while that of See also:carver is given to the artists or workmen who execute the sub-See also:ordinate decorations of See also:architecture.
