ANTONIO (162o ?–1669 ?), See also:Italian musical composer, was See also:born at See also:Florence about 162o. He was a See also:pupil of See also:Carissimi, and after holding a See also:post somewhere in Florence as See also:maestro di cappella entered the papal See also:chapel in 166o. In 1666 he became See also:Vice-Kapellmeister at See also:Vienna, and died at See also:Venice in 1669. Cesti is known principally as a composer of operas, the most celebrated of which were La Dori (Venice, 1663) and II Pomo d' oro (Vienna, 1668). He was also a composer of chamber-cantatas, and his operas are notable for the pure and delicate See also:style of their airs, more suited to the chamber than to the See also:stage.
