CHAPELLE ARDENTE (Fr. " burning See also:

chapel ") , the chapel or See also:room in which the See also:corpse of a See also:sovereign or other exalted personage lies in See also:state pending the funeral service. The name is in allusion to the many candles which are lighted See also:round the See also:catafalque. This See also:custom is first chronicled as occurring at the See also:obsequies of Dagobert I. (602–638).
