CHAPERON , originally a cap or See also:

hood (Fr. See also:chape) worn by nobles and knights of the Garter in full See also:dress, and after the 16th See also:century by See also:middle-aged ladies. The See also:modern use of the word is of a married or elderly See also:lady (cf. " See also:duenna ") escorting or protecting a See also:young and unmarried girl in public places and in society.
