See also:direct N.N.W. of See also:Brisbane. It is the centre of an important See also:gold-See also:field, the reefs of which improve at the See also:lower depths, the deepest See also:shaft on the field being 2558 ft. below the See also:surface-level. The gold is of a very See also:fine quality. An abundant See also:water-See also:supply is obtained from the Burdekin See also:river, some 8 m. distant. The See also:population of the town in 1901 was 5523; but within a 5 M. See also:radius it was 20,976. Charters Towers became a See also:municipality in 1877.
