CHERNIGOV , a See also:

town of See also:Russia, See also:capital of the above See also:government, on the right See also:bank of the Desna, nearly See also:half a mile from the See also:river, 141 M. by See also:rail N.E. of See also:Kiev on a See also:branch See also:line. Pop. (1897) 27,006. It is an archiepiscopal see and possesses a See also:cathedral of the 11th See also:century. In 907 the See also:city is mentioned in the treaty of See also:Oleg as next in importance to Kiev, and in the IT th century it became the capital of the principality of Syeversk and an important commercial city. The Mongol invasion put an end to its prosperity in 1239. Lithuania annexed it in the 14th century, but it was soon seized by See also:Poland, which held it until the 17th century. In 1686 it was definitely annexed to Russia.
