CHERKASY (See also:Polish, Czerkasy) , a See also:town of See also:Russia, in the See also:government of See also:Kiev, 96 m. S.E. of Kiev, on the right See also:bank of the See also:Dnieper. Pop. (1883) 15,740; (1897) 26,619. The inhabitants (Little Russians) are mostly employed in See also:agriculture and gardening; but See also:sugar and See also:tobacco are manufactured and See also:spirits distilled. Cherkasy was an important town of the See also:Ukraine in the 15th See also:century, and remained so, under Polish See also:rule, until the revolt of the Cossack See also:hetman See also:Chmielnicki (1648). It was annexed by Russia in 1795.
