CHERIBON , a residency of the See also:

island of See also:Java, Dutch See also:East Indies, bounded S. and W. by the See also:Preanger regencies, N.W. by See also:Krawang, N. by the Java See also:Sea, and E. by the residencies of Tegal and Banyumas. Pop. (1897) 1,577,521, including 867 Europeans, 2Io8 See also:Chinese, and 2016 See also:Arabs and other See also:Asiatic foreigners. The natives consist of See also:Middle Javanese in the See also:north and Sundanese in the See also:south. Cheribon has been for many centuries the centre of Islamism in western Java, and is also the seat of a fanatical See also:Mahommedan See also:sect controlled from See also:Mecca. The native See also:population is on the whole orderly and prosperous. The See also:northern See also:half of the residency is See also:flat and marshy in places, especially in the north-western corner, while the See also:southern half is mountainous. In the middle stands the huge See also:volcano Cherimai, clad with virgin See also:forest and See also:coffee plantations, and surrounded at its See also:foot by See also:rice See also:fields. South-south-See also:west of Cherimai on the Preanger border is the Sawal volcano, at whose foot is the beautiful Penjalu See also:lake. See also:Sulphur and See also:salt springs occur on the slopes of Cherimai, and near Palimanan there is a cavernous hole called Guwagalang (or Payagalang), which exhales carbonic See also:acid See also:gas, and is considered See also:holy by the natives and guarded by priests. There is a similar hole in the Preanger. The See also:principal products of cultivation are See also:sugar, coffee, rice and also See also:tea and See also:pulse (rachang), the plantations being for the most See also:part owned by Europeans.

The See also:

chief towns are Cheribon, a seaport and See also:capital of the residency, the seaport of Indramaya, Palimanan, Majalengka, Kuningan and Chiamis. Cheribon has a See also:good open roadstead. The See also:town is very old and irregularly built, and the See also:climate is unhealthy; nevertheless it has a lively export See also:trade in sugar and coffee and is a See also:regular See also:port of See also:call. In 1908 the two descendants of the old sultans of Cheribon still resided there in their respective Kratons or palaces, and each received an See also:annual income of over £1500 for the loss of his privileges. A See also:country See also:residence belonging to one of the sultans is situated See also:close to Cheribon and is much visited on See also:account of its fantastic See also:architecture. Indramaya was a considerable trading See also:place in the days of the See also:early Portuguese and Dutch traders. Kuningan is famous for a breed of small but strong horses.
