KRAWANG , a residency of the See also:

island of See also:Java, Dutch See also:East Indies, bounded E. and S. by CharibGn and the See also:Preanger, W. by See also:Batavia, and N. by the Java See also:Sea, and comprising a few insignificant islands. The natives are Sundanese, but contain a large admixture of See also:Middle Javanese and Bantamers in the See also:north, where they established colonies in the 17th See also:century. Like the residency of Batavia, the See also:northern See also:half of Krawang is See also:flat and occasionally marshy, while the See also:southern half is mountainous and volcanic. Warm and See also:cold See also:mineral, See also:salt and See also:sulphur springs occur in the hills. Salt is extracted by the See also:government, though in smaller quantities now than formerly. The See also:principal products are See also:rice, See also:coffee, See also:sugar, See also:vanilla, See also:indigo and See also:nutmeg. Fishing is practised along the See also:coast and See also:forest culture in the hills, while the See also:industries also include the manufacture of coarse See also:linen, sacks and See also:leather tanning. See also:Gold and See also:silver were formerly thought to be hidden in the Parang See also:mountain in the Gandasoli See also:district See also:south-See also:west of Purwakarta, and See also:mining was begun by the Dutch East See also:India See also:Company in 1722. The largest See also:part of the residency consists of private lands, and only the Purwakarta and Krawang divisions forming the middle and north-west sections come directly under government See also:control. The See also:remainder of the residency is divided between the Pamanukan-Chiasem lands occupying - the whole eastern half of the residency and the Tegalwaru lands in the south-western corner. The former is owned by a company and forms the largest See also:estate in Java. The Tegalwaru is chiefly owned by See also:Chinese proprietors.

Purwakarta is the See also:

capital of the residency. Subang and Pamanukan both See also:lie at the junction of several roads near the See also:borders of See also:Cheribon and are the See also:chief centres of activity in the east of the residency.
