LEATHER, ARTIFICIAL . Under the name of artificial is considerable diversity in the preparation of such materials. A See also:common variety consists of a See also:web of See also:calico coated with boiled See also:linseed oil mixed with dryers and See also:lamp-See also:black or other pigment. Several coats of this mixture are uniformly spread, smoothed and compressed on the See also:cotton See also:surface by passing it between See also:metal rollers, and when the surface is required to possess a glossy See also:enamel-like See also:appearance, it receives a See also:finishing coat of See also:copal See also:varnish. A grained See also:morocco surface is given to the material by passing it between suitably embossed rollers. Preparations of this See also:kind have a See also:close See also:affinity to See also:cloth waterproofed with indiarubber, and to such manufactures as See also:ordinary waxcloth. An artificial leather which has been patented and proposed for use as soles for boots, &c., is composed of powdered scraps and cuttings of leather mixed with See also:solution of guttapercha dried and compressed. In See also:place of the guttapercha solution, oxidized linseed oil or dissolved See also:resin may be used as the binding See also:medium for the leather See also:powder.
