CHIVASSO , a See also:

town and episcopal see of See also:Piedmont, See also:Italy, in the See also:province of See also:Turin, 18 m. N.E. by See also:rail from the town of Turin, 600 ft. above See also:sea-level. Pop. (1901) 4169 (town), 9804 (See also:commune). It is situated on the See also:left See also:bank of the Po, near the influx of the Orco. The See also:cathedral is of the 15th See also:century with a See also:fine See also:facade ornamented with statues in terra-See also:cotta. It was an important fortress in the See also:middle ages, and until 1804, when the See also:French dismantled it. One See also:tower only of the old See also:castle of the marquesses of 114onferrato, who possessed the town from 1164 to 1435, remains. Chivasso is on the See also:main See also:line from Turin to See also:Milan, and is the junction of branches for See also:Aosta and Casale Monferrato.
