CLOACA , the Latin See also:

term given to the sewers laid to drain the See also:low marshy grounds between the hills of See also:Rome. The most important, which drained the See also:forum, is known as the Cloaca See also:Maxima and See also:dates from the 6th See also:century B.C. This was to ft. 6 in. wide, 14 ft. high, and was vaulted with three consecutive rings of voussoirs in See also:stone, the See also:floor being paved with polygonal blocks of See also:lava.
