law, a See also:person against whom proceedings are instituted or directed; one who is called upon to See also:answer in any suit. At one See also:time the See also:term " defendant " had a narrower meaning, that of a person sued in a See also:personal See also:action only, the corresponding term in a real action being " See also:tenant," but the distinction is now practically disregarded, except in a few states of the See also:United States.
