DIOGENIANUS , of See also:Heraclea on the See also:Pontus (or in See also:Caria), See also:Greek grammarian, flourished during the reign of See also:Hadrian. He was the author of an alphabetical See also:lexicon, chiefly of poetical words, abridged from the See also:great lexicon (See also:Hope 7Xc000-iav) of See also:Pamphilus of See also:Alexandria (1l. A.D. 5o) and other similar See also:works. It was also known by the See also:title Hepcepyo7rEV17res (for the use of "industrious poor students "). It formed the basis of the lexicon, or rather glossary, of See also:Hesychius of Alexandria, which is described in the See also:preface as a new edition of the See also:work of Diogenianus. We still possess a collection of See also:proverbs under his name, probably an abridgment of the collection made by himself from his lexicon (ed. by E. Leutsch and F. W. See also:Schneidewin in Paroemiographi Graeci, i. 1839). Diogenianus was also the author of an See also:Anthology of epigrams, of See also:treatises on See also:rivers, lakes, fountains and promontories; and of a See also:list (with See also:map) of all the towns in the See also:world.
