FREESIA , in See also:

botany, a genus of See also:plants belonging to the See also:Iris See also:family (See also:Iridaceae), and containing a single See also:species, F. refracta, native at the Cape of See also:Good See also:Hope. The plants grow from a corm (a solid bulb, as in See also:Gladiolus) which sends up a tuft of See also:long narrow leaves and a slightly branched See also:stem bearing a few leaves and loose one-sided spikes of fragrant narrowly See also:funnel-shaped See also:flowers. Several varieties are known in cultivation, differing in the See also:colour of the See also:flower, which is See also:white, cream or yellow. They See also:form See also:pretty greenhouse plants which are readily increased from See also:seed. They are extensively grown for the See also:market in See also:Guernsey, See also:England and See also:America. By potting successively throughout the autumn a See also:supply of flowers is obtained through See also:winter and See also:spring. Some very See also:fine large-flowered varieties, including See also:rose-coloured ones, are now being raised by various growers in England, and are a See also:great improvement on the older forms.
