GAEKWAR, or GUICOWAR , the See also:family name of the Mahratta rulers of See also:Baroda (q.v.) in western See also:India, which has been converted by the See also:English into a dynastic See also:title. It is derived from the See also:vernacular word for the cow, but it is a See also:mistake to suppose that the family are of the cowherd See also:caste ; they belong to the upper class of See also:Mahrattas proper, sometimes claiming a See also:Rajput origin. The See also:dynasty was founded by a See also:succession of three warriors, Damaji I., Pilaji and Damaji II., who established Mahratta supremacy throughout See also:Gujarat during the first See also:half of the 18th See also:century.
