GIFU (IMAIZUnti) , a See also:city of See also:Japan, See also:capital of the See also:ken (See also:government) of Central Nippon, which comprises the two provinces of Mino and Hida. Pop. about 41,000. It lies E. by N. of See also:Lake See also:Biwa, on the Central railway, on a tributary cf the See also:river Kiso, which flows to the See also:Bay of Miya Uro. Manufactures of See also:silk and See also:paper goods are carried on. The ken has an See also:area of about 4000 sq. m. and is thickly peopled, the See also:population exceeding 1,000,000. The whole See also:district is subject to frequent earthquakes.
