GIRISHK , a See also:

village and fort of See also:Afghanistan. It stands on the right See also:bank of the See also:Helmund 78 1n. W. of See also:Kandahar on the road to See also:Herat; 3641 ft. above the See also:sea. The fort, which is garrisoned from Kandahar and is the See also:residence of the See also:governor of the See also:district (Pusht-i-Rud), has little military value. It commands the fords of the Helmund and the road to See also:Seistan, from which it is about 190 M. distant; and it is the centre of a See also:rich agricultural district. Girishk was occupied by the See also:British during the first Afghan See also:War; and a small See also:garrison of sepoys, under a native officer, successfully withstood a See also:siege of nine months by an overwhelming Afghan force. The Dasht-i-Bakwa stretches beyond Girishk towards See also:Farah, a level See also:plain of consider-able width, which tradition assigns as the See also:field of the final contest for supremacy between See also:Russia and See also:England.
