HAJIPUR , a See also:

town of See also:British See also:India, in the See also:Muzaffarpur See also:district of See also:Bengal, on the See also:Gandak, just above its confluence with the See also:Ganges opposite See also:Patna. Pop. (See also:root), 21,398. Hajipur figures conspicuously in the See also:history of the struggles between See also:Akbar and his rebellious Afghan See also:governors of Bengal, being twice besieged and captured by the imperial troops, in 1572 and 1574• Within the limits of the old fort is a small See also:stone See also:mosque, very See also:plain, but of See also:peculiar See also:architecture, and attributed to Haji Ilyas, its traditional founder (c. 1350). Its command of See also:water See also:traffic in three directions makes the town a See also:place of considerable commercial importance. Hajipur has a station on the See also:main See also:line of the Bengal and See also:North-western railway.
