HAUGESUND , a seaport of See also:

Norway in See also:Stavanger amt (See also:county), on the See also:west See also:coast, 34 M. N. by W. of Stavanger. Pop. (1900), 7935• It is an important fishing centre. See also:Herrings are exported to the See also:annual value of £See also:Ioo,000 to 2Oo,000, also See also:mackerel and lobsters. 'The See also:principal imports are See also:coal and See also:salt. There are factories for woollen goods and a See also:margarine factory. Haugesund is the reputed See also:death-See also:place of See also:Harald Haarfager, to whom an See also:obelisk of red See also:granite was erected in 1872 on the thousandth anniversary of his victory at the Hafsfjord (near Stavanger) whereby he won the See also:sovereignty of Norway. The memorial stands 1 m. See also:north of the See also:town, on the Haraldshaug, where the See also:hero's supposed tombstone is shown.
