HEGESIPPUS , the supposed author of a See also:free Latin See also:adaptation of the Jewish See also:War of See also:Josephus under the See also:title De See also:bello Judaico et excidio urbis Hierosolymitanae. The seven books of Josephus are compressed into five, but much has been added from the Antiquities and from the See also:works of See also:Roman historians, while several entirely new speeches are introduced to suit the occasion. See also:Internal See also:evidence shows that the See also:work could not have been written before the 4th See also:century A.D. The author, who is undoubtedly a See also:Christian, describes it in his See also:preface as a See also:kind of revised edition of Josephus. Some authorities attribute it to See also:Ambrose, See also:bishop of See also:Milan (34o-397), but there is nothing to See also:settle the authorship definitely. The name Hegesippus itself appears to be a corruption of Josephus, through the stages 'Idssipros, Iosippus, Egesippus, Hegesippus, unless it was purposely adopted as reminiscent of Hegesippus, the See also:father of ecclesiastical See also:history (2nd century).
