HEMIMERUS , an Orthopterous or Dermapterous See also:insect, the See also:sole representative of the See also:family Hemimeridae, which has See also:affinities with both the Forfeculidae • (earwigs) and the Blattidae (See also:cock-roaches). Only two See also:species have been discovered, both from See also:West See also:Africa. The better known of these (H. hanseni) lives upon a large See also:rat-like rodent (Cricetomys gambianus) feeding perhaps upon its See also:external parasites, perhaps upon scurf and other dermal products. Like many epizoic or parasitic See also:insects, Hemimerus is wingless, eyeless and has relatively See also:short and strong legs. Correlated also with its mode of See also:life is the curious fact that it is viviparous, the See also:young being See also:born in an advanced See also:stage of growth.
