HEPHAESTION , a grammarian of See also:

Alexandria, who flourished in the See also:age of the Antonines. He was the author of a See also:manual (abridged from a larger See also:work in 48 books) of See also:Greek metres ('Ey €tpi&&ov 7rspl /AT pWV), which is most valuable as the only See also:complete See also:treatise on the subject that has been preserved. The concluding See also:chapter (Ilspi vrou7µaros) discusses the various kinds of poetical See also:composition. It is written in a clear and See also:simple See also:style, and was much used as a school-See also:book. See also:Editions by T. See also:Gaisford (1855, with the valuable scholia), R.
