dog, now used, except in See also:poetry, only of See also:dogs of the See also:chase, and particularly of the breed used in See also:hunting the See also:fox, the " hound " See also:par excellence. Other breeds have a defining word prefixed, e.g. See also:boar-hound, See also:stag-hound, &c. (see Doc). The O, Eng. hund is the See also:common See also:Teutonic name for the See also:animal,cf. Du. hond, Ger. Hund, &c., and is cognate with Sansk. See also:van, Gr. Kuwv, See also:Lat. canis, Ir. and Gael. cu.
