He was a member of the Society of See also:Friends, and was descended from members who had See also:long settled in See also:Cornwall, although he was not related to See also:George Fox who had introduced the community into the See also:county. He was distinguished for his researches on the See also:internal temperature of the See also:earth, being the first to prove that the See also:heat increased definitely with the See also:depth; his observations being conducted in Cornish mines from 1815 for a See also:period of See also:forty years. In 1829 he commenced a See also:series of experiments on the artificial See also:production of See also:miniature metalliferous See also:veins by means of the long-continued See also:influence of electric currents, and his See also:main results were published in Observations on See also:Mineral Veins (See also:Rep. Royal Cornwall Polytech. See also:Soc., 1836). He was one of the founders in 1833 of the Royal Cornwall Poly-technic Society. He constructed in 1834 an improved See also:form of deflector dipping See also:needle. In 1848 he was elected F.R.S. His See also:garden at Penjerrick near Falmouth became noted for the number of See also:exotic See also:plants which he had naturalized. He died on the 25th of See also:July 1877.
