STUART, See also:JOHN M`DOUALL (1818-1866), See also:South Australian explorer, was See also:born at See also:Dysart in Fifeshire, See also:Scotland, in 1818, and arrived in the See also:colony about 1839. He accompanied See also:Captain See also:Sturt's 1844-1845 expedition as draughtsman, and between 1858 and 1862 he made six expeditions into the interior, the last of which brought him on the 25th of See also:July to the shores of the See also:Indian Ocean at See also:Van See also:Diemen's Gulf, at the mouth of the See also:Adelaide See also:River. Stuart was not the first to See also:cross the See also:island See also:continent from south to See also:north; that See also:honour belongs to the See also:Burke and See also:Wills expedition, which reached the Gulf of See also:Carpentaria on the 6th of See also:February 1861. Stuart returned to Adelaide exhausted and broken, and never recovered from the effects of the See also:great privations which he suffered. He returned to See also:England, where he died on the 5th of See also:June 1866. Stuart was rewarded with £3000 and a See also:grant of See also:i000 sq. m. of grazing See also:country in the interior See also:rent See also:free for seven years. His name is perpetuated by Central See also:Mount Stuart.
