He was educated in See also:commerce, and on entering the service of the East See also:India See also:Company speedily attained high See also:rank. In 1631 he led a Dutch See also:fleet from the Indies to See also:Holland, and in 1636 he was raised to the governor-generalship. He came into conflict with the Portuguese, and took their possessions in See also:Ceylon and Malacca from them. He greatly extended the commercial relationships of the Dutch, opening up See also:trade with Tong-See also:king, See also:China and See also:Japan. As an See also:administrator also he showed ability, and the See also:foundation of a Latin school and several churches in See also:Batavia is to be ascribed to him. Exploring expeditions were sent to See also:Australia under his auspices in 1636 and 1642, and See also:Abel See also:Tasman named after him (Van Diemen's See also:Land) the See also:island now called See also:Tasmania. Van Diemen died at Batavia on the 19th of See also:April 1645.
