CHINA , the See also:

common name for See also:ware made of See also:porcelain, given because it came from China, where the first vitrified, translucent, See also:white ware was produced. The Portuguese or Italians gave it the name of " porcelain " (q.v.). See also:English usage was influenced by See also:India and the See also:East, where the See also:Persian See also:chin was widely prevalent as the name of the ware. This is seen also in some of the earlier forms and pronunciations, e.g. chiney, cheney, and later chancy (see See also:CERAMICS; and for " china-See also:clay " See also:KAOLIN).
