He graduated in 1843 at the See also:Berkshire Medical See also:College (no longer in existence) at See also:Pittsfield, See also:Mass., and after practising See also:medicine in 1844-1847, and making an unsuccessful See also:attempt, with See also:Charles See also:Robinson (1818-1894), later first See also:governor of the See also:state of See also:Kansas, to establish a See also:hospital for See also:women, he taught for a brief See also:period in See also:Richmond, See also:Virginia, and in 1848 was See also:superintendent of See also:schools in See also:Vicksburg, See also:Mississippi. In 1849 he became assistant editor under See also:Samuel See also:Bowles, and three years later one of the owners, of the See also:Springfield (Massachusetts) Republican, with which he retained his connexion until 1867. He then travelled for some See also:time in See also:Europe, and in 1870 removed to New See also:York, where he helped to establish and became editor and one-third owner of Scribner's Monthly (the See also:title of which was changed in 1881 to The See also:Century), which absorbed the See also:periodicals See also:Hours at See also:Home, See also:Putnam's See also:Magazine and the See also:Riverside Magazine. He remained editor of this magazine until his See also:death. Dr Holland's books See also:long enjoyed a wide popularity. The earlier ones were published over the See also:pseudonym " See also:Timothy Titcomb." His writings fall into four classes: See also:history and See also:biography, represented by a History of Western Massachusetts (1855), and a See also:Life of See also:Abraham See also:Lincoln (1865); fiction, of which See also:Miss Gilbert's Career (186o) and The See also:Story of See also:Sevenoaks (1875) remain faithful pictures of See also:village life in eastern See also:United States; See also:poetry, of which See also:Bitter-Sweet (1858) and Kathrina, Her Life and Mine (1867) were widely read; and a See also:series of homely essays on the See also:art of living, of which the most characteristic were Letters to See also:Young See also:People, Single and :harried (1858), See also:Gold See also:Foil, hammered from Popular See also:Proverbs (18J9), Letters to the Jonses (1863), and Every-See also:Day Topics (2 series, 1876 and 1882). While a See also:resident of New York, where he died on the 12th of See also:October 1881, he identified himself with See also:measures for See also:good See also:government and school reform, and in 1872 became a member and for a See also:short time in 1873 was See also:president of the See also:Board of See also:Education. See Mrs H. M. See also:Plunkett's Josiah Gilbert Holland (New York, 1894).
