GILBERT, See also:GROVE KARL (1843– ) , See also:American geologist, was See also:born at See also:Rochester, N.Y., on the 6th of May 1843. In 1869 he was attached to the See also:Geological Survey of See also:Ohio and in 1879 he became a member of the See also:United States Geological Survey, being engaged on parts of the Rocky Mountains, in See also:Nevada, See also:Utah, See also:California and See also:Arizona. He is distinguished for his researches on See also:mountain-structure and on the See also:Great Lakes, as well as on glacial phenomena, See also:recent See also:earth movements, and on topographic features generally. His See also:report on the See also:Geology of the See also:Henry Mountains (1877), in which the volcanic structure known as a See also:laccolite was first described; his See also:History of the See also:Niagara See also:River (189o) and See also:Lake See also:Bonneville (1891—the first of the Monographs issued by the United States Geological Survey) are specially important. He was awarded the See also:Wollaston See also:medal by the Geological Society of See also:London in 1900.
