BONNEVILLE, See also:BENJAMIN L . E. (1795-1878), See also:American military engineer and explorer, was See also:born in See also:France about 1795. He emigrated to the See also:United States in See also:early youth, and graduated at the United States Military See also:Academy at See also:West Point in 1815. He was engaged in the construction of military roads in the See also:south-west, and became a See also:captain of See also:infantry in 1825. In 1831—1836, having obtained leave of See also:absence from the See also:army, he conducted, largely on his own responsibility, an exploring expedition to the Rocky Mountains, proceeding up the See also:Platte See also:river through parts of the later states of See also:Colorado and See also:Wyoming into the See also:Great See also:Salt See also:Lake See also:basin and thence into See also:California. After being absolutely cut off from See also:civilization for several years, and having his name struck from the army See also:list, he returned with an interesting and valuable See also:account of his adventures, which was edited and amplified by See also:Washington See also:Irving and published under the See also:title The Rocky Mountains: or Scenes, Incidents, and Adventures in the Far West; from the See also:Journal of Captain Benjamin L. E. Bonneville of the Army of the United States (2 vols., 1837), subsequent See also:editions bearing the title The Adventures of Captain Bonneville, U.S.A., in the Rocky Mountains and the Far West. Bonneville became a See also:major in 1845, and was breveted See also:lieutenant-See also:colonel for gallantry in the battles of Contreras and Churubusco during the Mexican See also:War. He became a colonel in 1855, commanded the Gila river expedition against the Apaches in 1857, and from 1858 to 1861 commanded the See also:department of New See also:Mexico. He was retired in 1861, but served during the See also:Civil War as recruiting officer and commandant of See also:barracks at St See also:Louis, See also:Missouri, receiving the See also:brevet See also:rank of brigadier-See also:general in 1865.

He died at Fort See also:

Smith, See also:Arkansas, on the rzth of See also:June 1878. The See also:extinct glacial lake which once covered what is now See also:north-western See also:Utah has been named in his See also:honour.
