From 1856 to 1861 he was mathematical master at See also:Westminster school, and See also:geology was pursued by him only as a recreation, mainly in Alpine regions. In 1868 he was appointed See also:tutor at St John's College and lecturer in geology. His See also:attention was specially directed to the study of the igneous and metamorphic rocks in Alpine regions and in various parts of See also:England, in the See also:Lizard, at Salcombe, in Charnwood See also:Forest, in See also:Wales and the Scottish See also:Highlands. In 1877 he was chosen See also:professor of geology in University College, See also:London. He became secretary and afterwards See also:president of the See also:Geological Society (1884—1886), secretary of the See also:British Association (1881—1885), president of the Mineralogical Society and of the Alpine See also:Club. He was also in 1887 appointed honorary See also:canon of See also:Manchester. His purely scientific See also:works are: See also:Cambridgeshire Geology (1875); The See also:Story of our See also:Planet (1893); See also:Charles See also:Lyell and See also:Modern Geology (1895); See also:Ice See also:Work, Past and See also:Present (1896); Volcanoes (1899). In addition to many papers published in the Quarterly See also:Journal of the Geological Society and Geological See also:Magazine, he wrote several popular works on Alpine Regions, on English and Welsh scenery, as well as on theological subjects.
