THOMAS (c. 1654-1720) , only son of the last named, succeeded his grandfather as 2nd See also:earl of See also:Stamford. He took some See also:part in resisting the arbitrary actions of See also:Charles II., and was arrested in See also:July 1685; then after his See also:release he took up arms on behalf of See also:William of See also:Orange, after whose See also:accession to the See also:throne he was made a. privy councillor and See also:lord-See also:lieutenant of See also:Devonshire. In 1697 he became See also:chancellor of the duchy of See also:Lancaster, and in 1699 See also:president of the See also:board of See also:trade, being dismissed from his See also:office on the accession of See also:Anne in 1702. From 1707 to 1711, however, he was again president of the board of trade. On his See also:death without See also:children on the 31st of See also:January 1720 his titles passed to his See also:cousin See also:HENRY (d. 1739), a See also:grandson of the first earl, from whom the later earls were descended.
